True Self Expression, a new cosmetics company headquartered inFairfield, is dedicated to providing natural, high-quality productsthat the consumer can use in highly individual ways. Begun lastOctober by Stacy Dalton and Cat Grayson, True Self Expression'sunique cosmetics have been well received throughout SoutheastIowa.
Explaining the company's mission, Cat says, "Life is not aboutcopying trends. We reveal who we are inside by the way we presentourselves to the world. Our beauty is unique, our verve and vibe areunique. So the way we present ourselves to the world should have apersonalized style."
For many years, natural, cruelty-free cosmetics were onlyavailable in varying shades of brown. True Self Expression offersDazzle Dust in a wide range of long-wearing, natural colors, withmica added for sparkle, that can be used in a variety ofapplications. Glitter Goo uses man-made, cosmetic-grade glitters, butimmerses them in a healthy blend of organic aloe vera gel andvegetable glycerin that nourishes skin and hair.
"We are always striving to create new vibrant colors, and moreexciting products, like lip-gloss, lip-and-eye pencils, and mascara,just to name a few," says Stacy.
Traditional cosmetic companies frequently use artificial orpetroleum-based ingredients that can irritate skin, animal andanimal-tested products, and excessive non-biodegradable packaging.True Self Expression uses organic, non-GMO ingredients and avoidsplastic containers whenever possible.
"The best thing about True Self Expression is that our productsdon't hurt anyone," says Cat. They never test any of their productson animals, "just on our friends," says Stacy.
Since its creation last fall, True Self Expression has enjoyedmany successes. During the Christmas 2001 season, Natural Selectionshad to restock Dazzle Dust every other day right up to Christmas Eve.Glitter Goo was recently added to True's line and is available atTranquillity boutique. Both products have now been picked up by NewPioneer Co-op in Coralville.
