PERFORMING ARTS

Dance Theatre of Iowa Plans to Scare Up an Audience for Halloween Dance Concert October 25-28

October 2001

The Dance Theatre of Iowa will present a Halloween Dance Concert October 25-28 at the Iowa Conservatory Theater. The dance performances celebrate the trick-or-treat season with entertaining Halloween fantasy characters appropriate for all ages.

Emma Rainey, artistic director of DTI, working with Andy McKenzie of Hedquist Productions, has gathered a wealth of music guaranteed to conjure up a fun-filled evening for families with classics such as "Night on Bald Mountain," "In The Hall of the Mountain King," and more. Joining Emma in creating this original concert are choreographers Rise Stokstad, Rebecca Busch, and Monica Ratner.

Additional performances are slated for public schools in southeast Iowa in a continuing effort to give youngsters a first-hand taste of classical ballet. Last spring Dance Theatre of Iowa toured schools in Ottumwa with the classic ballet Peter and the Wolf. A teacher from Wilson Elementary School wrote, "We are an 'at risk' school, and often times our students are not exposed to the arts. Our students were enthralled during the entire program. You inspired many of our students to think about taking dance lessons. I was meeting with one of the small groups of students I work with and we were talking about things to do when they get angry. One of the boys said, 'Well, we could dance!' How great is that?"

DTI is committed to creating original and quality works and is endorsed by the Iowa State Council of the Arts and is on their roster of performing artists.

Don't miss this exciting Halloween Concert, on Thursday, October 25, at 5:30 p.m., Friday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Performances are at ICT, 1900 W. Stone. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for children, and are available at Somebody Cares. For information, please call (641) 472-0654.
